More stinky Pirates

After posting my Pirate the other day, my friend shared some pirate photo-reference from her advanced figure drawing class this semester, so I did some sketches. Since the week isn't out yet, I though I'll post 'em! Argh!

Ink the Pirate

Okay, so I may have used the pirate theme for one of my inking assignments. I think before Pirates of the Caribbean (the movie) came out I had another mental image when I thought of pirates, and to this day I still think that's the most amazing pirate story ever told. I'm talking about the Monkey Island games by Lucasart (before all they did was Star Wars games). Monkey Island is definitely my favorite game of all-times. It was an amazing adventure game and the most important part: FUNNY AS HELL. I truly recommend this game to anyone and right now is a good moment to start because the past few years they released an special edition for the first and second game.

This game marked me so much that, after playing the third one, the art style really influenced the way I drew for a long time.

I know that, because I needed to take reference from a photograph, I didn't draw Guybrush (the main character from the Monkey Island game) but I also posted an illustration I did a few years ago as a fan art of the game. I hope you enjoy it!

Last Pirate post

Some of my favorite moments of the Disney attraction, the cave scenes. I tried to boil down the essence of that scene for me, and this is it. "Dead men tell no tales" I sent this in to the Disney fine art people to sell on property, so keep your fingers crossed.

 I am a huge Aquabat fan, and one of their songs is called "Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates," an epic tale about a boy who joins a crew to track down and stop the deadliest pirates in the seven seas! These I did a bit ago, just for fun, but now I can finally use them!

So when I was five I rode "Pirates of the Caribbean" at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I was told that I cried at the exploding water. All I know is that the experience would forever cement pirates in my brain as one of the coolest things ever. So this is the first piece I'll post this week, it's an homage to east coast Pirates of the Caribbean. "yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me"

Trying to catch up!

Okay, so I've been out for a while but here I am trying to keep up. I may end up skipping a few post but here are the Indiana Jones and the Pulp heroes drawings.

For the Indiana Jones I went with the Doctors. This has to be my favorite movie of the three and I really love the dynamic between the two of them. (Even though my dad started calling me Junior because of this movie).

And as for the Pulp Hero I decided to go with The Shadow. It's no secret that I really like dark characters and even that awful Alec Baldwin movie was entertaining to watch.

Star Trek...or Wars, I can't keep it straight...

I was right next to Phillip watching ST for all of those young years. I believe they would show the original and the Next Generation back to back, if memory serves. But I also will always hold TNG dear. However, I was thoroughly entertained and entranced with J.J.'s new revamp. But was I the only one who noticed the Star Wars similarities? Young kid growing up on a farm with his uncle, hating it and wanting to escape. His hero father died when he was an infant. Friend of his father's finds him and beacons him to go on a hero's journey and to become a hero like his father. Faces off with a villain who has a weapon that can destroy planets...any of this ringing bells?
That's why the caption to my first sketch is, "I think you're looking for another orphaned son of a hero, Mr Obi Wan."

"I can't see nothing in this!" Like I said, I loved TNG, and my favorite character was always Geordi La Forge. Maybe it was because I was already partial to LeVar Burton from his Reading Rainbow days, but who knows. I thought he was the coolest guy. In my first adventure with film making, I played the whitest Geordi la Forge you'd ever see!

Resistance is Futile

One of the first things I ever nerded out about was Star Trek. It was something to watch with my dad and I loved it. TNG will always have a special place in my heart even though I haven't watched it in fifteen to twenty years.

One of the most shocking, I-have-to-see-what-happens-next moments that I ever first experienced was the season finale of the third season - when Picard steps onto the screen of the Enterprise no longer a man but Locutus of Borg. I don't think I knew of the concept of a season or a finale until that moment, but I could never forget after that.

Okay, so this week we get to do something really cool. Robert has a creator-owned property he's launching with blog friend Quinn Johnson called "Elders of the Runestone." Hey hey. I've always been a fan of the old warzone Punisher by JR JR. He's not a pretty guy, and he looks like he's been busy Punishing. To pump myself up for this pic, I watched the Punisher with Thomas Jane! I know, I know, I new it was a bad idea, I had every reason not to do it, and I watched it anyway. I'm sorry.

Won't You Be My Punisher?

So, I was thinking of Punisher on the way back from work, and I thought he was originally a Vietnam Vet, like a Special Ops guy, right? And that made me think of Mr Rogers! He was a sniper in the war--or so the rumor is. Punisher is getting old, so when is he going to start an afternoon children's program with a sweater vest, comfy shoes and puppets? Just curious.

The Punisher

I went a little different for this week and rather than doing straight Punisher went with Frank from one of my favorit stories Punisher: Born.  The book covers the last 4 days of Frank Castle's time in Vietnam and the events that lay the seeds for him to become The Punisher.  Think Apocalypse Now meets The Punisher and you've got the tone of that book.  In any case I have an endless love for this series as Punisher MAX solidified me sticking with comics, so if you can check it out!
