Invader Zim

Invader Zim looked so cool. I remember seeing the commercials before it came out and just loving how angular and funky everything looked. Plus, the hot pinks, greens and purples were such a perfect color palette. Long live Zim!

X-TEAM

I mean, they aren't all guys. Heck, they aren't even all people. 'X-Men'....sheesh.

In other news, I thought up a slogan for the 'X-Men', were they to advertise on TV or in the newspaper or something:

WE SWEAT SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO! X-MEN

COWABUNGA!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the epitome of comics for me as a kid---they had super powers (from the ooze), radical catch-phrases, bogus artwork and far out stories, and nasty bad guys. I liked that the heroes were turtles, but had human friends, and (of course), I could relate with them on an entirely different level because of the fact that we both loved pizza.

For whatever its worth, I think that the Ninja Turtles summed up drawing for me, too. I figured that if you were going to draw something that looked realistic, you might as well take a photograph. Drawing was for making things up. The Ninja Turtles were the best of both worlds---they were made up, but drawn in a fairly realistic manner. It was true make believe.

Anyway, I plan on adding to this blog more regularly now :)

Spawn and The Violator by Jess Smart Smiley

When I was 14 years old, I was really into Spawn. His cape was so cool and Todd McFarlane's choice of red against black was as tough as colors got! I remember loving the clown and how he turned into the Violator and I freaked out when the movie was released.

Anyway, here is a drawing I made for a contest when I was 14 or 15:

Nite Owl by Jess Smart Smiley

Darn. I was hoping to start with something earth-shattering, but all I came up with is this doodle of Nite Owl:
